2i Feeder – Allen Kansas

I’m Mike Roth and I’m at 2iFeeders in Allen, Kansas. We are a 10,000 head grow yard in Allen, Kansas. We background a lot of cattle and get ready to take them to grass. We typically turn out about 8,000 to 9,000 head on grass each year here in the Flint Hills. But we also finish some cattle to go to slaughter. We build feeder cattle; we’ll buy some four and five weight calves and take then to 800 or 900 pounds and then sell them as feeders. We also calve out some cows for customers and wean calves for them. And then we also feed some white fat cows to go to slaughter. Well, this market has changed considerably, considering our numbers and that’s the thing, you know obviously our cow herd is the smallest level that it’s been since the early ’50s. And that’s… we’ve seen that all through the market both in breeding cattle and in how they’ve increased in value and also in these calves, you know there’s just not very many of them. And so there’s a lot less than what there has been and those cattle are costing a third more this year than they have in the last couple of years. It looks like it’s going to take some time to rebuild those numbers before those costs come back to where we’re used to. It’s a little difficult, it takes a lot more money to operate, just because it takes more money to buy these cattle. And our feed costs in the last couple years, have been considerably higher. We have gotten a break this year, corn prices are down. Hay is down and some of the byproducts that we feed are also down. If we stay at those levels, we feel like we can make it through this situation. You know it’s good when we’re selling those cattle. It makes it tough when we’re replacing them, the cost of them. But we think the feed costs will help us get through there and obviously if we can keep our margins where we need to be we’ll be able to continue to buy and sell cattle. If you’ve got some interest in talking to us at 2iFeeders we do have a website, actually a new website, it was just rebuilt here in the last six months. It is just 2iFeeders.com. or you can give us a call here at Allen at any time and we’d love to talk to you about any opportunities that we might have.
